A NEW LIFE
The Sacrament of Baptism
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” – Romans 6:3-4
Preparation for Baptism
- For Infants to 6 yrs of age: The sheer gratuitousness of salvation is particularly manifest in the baptism of children. In expressing a desire to have their child baptized, parents are accepting the responsibility of raising their child in the Catholic faith. Baptism Preparation Classes are available for the parents and God-parents.
- For Children aged 7 to 17: Unbaptized children above the age of 6 are prepared for Baptism through Religious Education Classes. Contact the Director of Religious Education for details.
- For Adults: Adults wishing to be baptized are prepared through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Sessions are held throughout the year.
CLAIMING A CHILD FOR CHRIST
Baptism Preparation Class
We are honored that you have chosen the Cathedral to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism for your child.
Since parents are called to be the first teachers in the Faith for their children, parents should be instructed on the importance of Baptism as a Sacrament. Given the scheduling challenges that parents face, we now offer a convenient online session on Baptism that you can complete at home. You can access the website via this link. There is an online fee of $9.95 paid to Ascension Press. A Certificate of Completion will be generated after the session.
We need a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate.
It is a tradition in the Church to have Godparents. Strictly speaking, however, the Sacrament of Baptism is valid even if no Godparents are chosen. Additionally, you can choose to have only one Godparent; but if two are chosen, one must be a Godfather and one a Godmother. ALL Godparents, however, must be Catholic to sponsor in the Catholic Church: therefore, they must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church, having received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Godparents must:
- Complete the online Baptism session and provide the Certificate of Completion OR they can attend a traditional Baptismal Preparation Class at their home parish.
- Provide a “Sponsor Form” from their parish stating they are Catholics in good standing.
Baptisms are held on the 2nd Saturday of the Month at 11:00 am, but alternate dates can be chosen that are convenient for your schedule.
Contact Ashlie O’Brien at the Parish Office (561) 622-2565 for more information or to schedule an alternate date.
We must receive all documents at least two weeks prior to the Baptism.
